Distance learning programs as an enhancement to regular education, is often thought of as a fairly recent invention, but it has been going on for more than a hundred years.

It started in the 19th century when settlements were few and far apart, and lessons or books were sent through the mail. This type of "mail order" learning would evolve over the next century, to learning from records, audiotapes and video cassettes, but remaining by definition, learning at a distance without an instructor being physically present.

The value of distance learning programs in this era of downsizing and poor job markets, has been enormous. Those who find themselves in need of broadening their academic skills, but also needing to work, are now able to achieve not only a GED online, but have access to degree programs as well.

Students are able to focus on the subject areas of their choice, at their pace, and in their own homes, with online resources and email contact with instructors to support them as they work towards supplementing their previous education. Research, study and assignments can be completed all at once, or in stages, as time and other responsibilities such as work and family allow.

The rewards from distance learning programs are many, including a boost in self-esteem, a higher academic profile, and credit towards a degree, all of which show potential employers that a student has what it takes, and is willing to make the effort to achieve personal education goals.
